April is National Healthy Homes Month (NHHM). On this month we raise awareness, motivate action, and educate families to identify common health hazards such as lead, radon, pests and allergens to promote healthy homes.

- Participate in Events and Education
- Contact your local, state, or federal representatives to highlight the importance of safe, affordable housing
- Join or support coalitions like the National Safe and Healthy Housing Coalition to advocate for policy changes
Lead Inspection & Remediation Programs
These programs provide free or low-cost lead risk assessments and, in some cases, physical home repairs for qualified families.
- UPMC Pinnacle ELI Program: This program provides Environmental Lead Investigations (ELIs) for families in Cumberland County whose children have elevated blood lead levels.
- Referral required: A child’s doctor must refer the case if the child tests positive for lead (3.5 mcg/dL or higher).
- Contact: Reach Joyce A. Ravinskas at (717) 782-6443 or (717) 782-4608.
- PA Lead-Free Promise Project: A statewide initiative that connects residents with local health departments and municipal leaders to navigate HUD-funded lead programs and remediation grants.
- Lead Safe Program: While based in the City of Harrisburg, this program is a primary regional resource that may provide insights for those living just across the river. It offers free lead inspections and up to $13,500 in remediation work for low-income families with children under six.
