King was a fierce advocate for equity and fair housing. In 1967, his “The Other America” speech at Stanford University called for federal fair housing legislation to prevent discrimination and advance equity and unity nationwide. Twelve months later, the Fair Housing Act of 1968 would pass to expand on the Civil Rights Act and prohibit discrimination concerning the sale, rental, and financing of housing based on race, religion, national origin, sex, handicap, and family status.
