Housing Awareness Month is raising awareness of fair housing rights and ending housing discrimination in all forms. There are Federal and State laws that govern how we define fair housing:
The Federal Fair Housing Act protects Race, Color, Religion, National Origin, Sex, Disability, and Familial Status (families with children under 18).
The Pennsylvania Human Relations Act expands protections based on Age (40+) and Ancestry.
In April 1968 The Fair Housing Act was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson, banning housing discrimination. This landmark civil rights legislation was enacted just one week after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., making it a crucial, urgent step toward ending housing discrimination.
